FWCS Hires New Facilities Director
Record Number: 8711 Displayed from: Apr 24 2012 12:00AM, until: Jun 30 2012 12:00AMThe Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of School Trustees today approved Darren Hess as the district's new Facilities Director, overseeing all aspects of construction and maintenance. Hess joined FWCS in 2000 as the Coordinator of Physical Plant Improvement. Before coming to FWCS, he worked for the City of Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department and Russell Engineering Associates. He is a graduate of Purdue University. As Facilities Director, he replaces Steve Parker, who left the district earlier this year because of a serious illness. Parker had been with FWCS for 14 years. The Board also accepted the retirements of three long-time administrators:
- Elementary Area Administrator Dan Bickel is retiring after 21 years with FWCS. He started his career in Wabash County in 1972 and spent seven years in Huntington County before joining FWCS as the principal of Weisser Park Elementary School. He was principal at the arts magnet school until becoming an area administrator in 2003.
- Blackhawk Middle School Principal Tim Matthias is retiring after 40 years with FWCS. Matthias began his career at Northrop High School where he worked for 12 years. In 1984, he became the assistant principal at Blackhawk, a position he held for six years until returning to Northrop as assistant principal for three years. He went back to Blackhawk in 1993 to serve as principal.
- Haley Elementary Principal Nate Spicer is retiring after 39 years with FWCS. Spicer began as a teacher at Study Elementary in 1973. He then taught at Whitney Young Elementary and Portage Middle School before becoming the assistant principal at Memorial Park Middle School in 1983. In 1987, he became principal of Washington Elementary, where he spent four years before moving to Haley in 1991.
